Recycle boat winter wrap

The SADC des Laurentides and the CAE Rive-Nord have joined forces to expand Synergie Économique Laurentides’ orphan plastic recycling project. The component supported by the SADC des Laurentides and the CAE Rive-Nord aims to keep winter boat shrink wrap covers out of landfills. The contribution of the two organizations will increase the scope of the SEL plastic recovery project and expand the collection territory.

Diverting boat covers from landfills requires extensive field work. Boat storage companies must be approached to change their practices. They need to be educated, equipped and supported. Recovered plastics must meet the recycling requirements in order to be recycled rather than landfilled, so their characterization is necessary. Finally, material storage and transportation to recyclers requires logistics specific to each company or territory. This entire recycling chain is developed by the Synergie Économique Laurentides team, which has expertise in circular economy.

Project Steps

The project includes the following actions:

•  Company recruitment;
•  Plastic characterization;
•  Training and material storage for participating companies;
•  Agreement with the conditioners and recyclers;
•  Transportation planning of material to the recycler.

Expected results

Following a study conducted by SEL, the quantities of boat plastic wrap that could potentially be diverted from landfills each year represent 40 tons, of which 28 tons are found on the territory of the SADC des Laurentides and the CAE Rive-Nord.

The objective is to recycle 72% of the boat covers present on our territories.
